This section shares helpful reminders, best practices, and quick tips for Jamaican electricians. All recommendations align with the Electricity Act (2015) and JS 316 / NEC standards. Always work safe, follow the Code, and deliver good workmanship that protects life and property.

General Installation Guidelines
- Minimum conduit size in concrete columns: 32mm or 38mm.
- Minimum burial depth for underground conduit or cable: 20 inches.
- Maintain at least 60% free space in conduits and trunking for proper air flow.
- Use appropriate ends, bushings, bonding nipples, and termination glands to prevent conductor damage.
- All joints must be electrically and mechanically sound. Use proper connectors; electrical tape alone is not sufficient.
Service & Main Supply Requirements
- Residential properties should have 220V supply, minimum 6mm conductors, 30A double-pole, and 8-way panel.
- Always anchor service wire to a stanchion with pipe rider, not to the board eave.
- Perform load calculations to determine proper conductor and panel size; discuss with client to identify appliances and fixtures.
- Minimum height across main thoroughfares: 19 feet.
- Meter socket must not be installed inside the house or on a veranda; should be near the perimeter fence.
- Conductors 25mm and above require a 200A meter socket.
Panels & Circuit Breakers
- Smallest acceptable panel: 8-way.
- Main wire above 10mm should be in a 12-way panel or larger.
- Each breaker in the panel must be clearly labelled.
- One conductor must terminate in one breaker only.
- Panel board should never be used as a draw box or junction box.
- Panels must be easily accessible to occupants, except children.
Circuits & Outlets
- Each lighting circuit must have its own 15A single-pole or double-pole breaker.
- Each set of convenience outlets should be on its own 20A single-pole breaker.
- Provide enough outlets to reduce use of extension cords.
- Refrigerators must have a dedicated outlet.
- Maintain correct colour codes: Red/Brown (Phase), Black/Blue (Neutral), Green (Earth). Use colour tape if correct colour not available.
Appliances & Special Equipment
- All 220V appliances (water pumps, air conditioners, stoves, heaters, dryers) must have their own circuit breaker.
- Include isolation device or pilot light switch within sight of appliance.
- Each 220V circuit should have its own conduit to the panel board.
Earthing & Grounding
- Earth electrodes must be copper and at least six feet deep.
- Install a 4-inch pipe (12 inches long) around each electrode and attach an ‘Earth Danger’ tag.
Safety & Code Compliance
- Countertops, bathrooms, and wash areas must have GFCI outlets and breakers as per code.
- Outdoor fixtures must be weatherproof and installed to standard.
- Follow code-specified mounting heights for switches, sockets, panels, and fixtures.
- All surface wiring in commercial installations must be in conduit or armoured cable.
- Electrical work must always be safe, code-compliant, and neatly done.
