@sparky.electricia Trying to get electricity connected to your property in Jamaica? 🇯🇲⚡ Here is the full breakdown of what actually needs to happen, step by step: First, if you own, rent or lease a property without power, you must start by getting a registered electrician. They will visit the property, inspect the installation, and point out anything that is not up to standard. If there are any issues, those must be fully corrected before anything else can move forward. Everything has to meet the proper electrical standards (JS 316 / NEC). After that, you (or your electrician) will need to register on the Government Electrical Regulator (GER) portal and submit all the required information. Your electrician will then prepare the electrical drawings and upload the installation details. Important: if your system is 60 amps or more, a Professional Engineer must sign off on the drawings. Once submitted, a Completion Certificate will be issued. Then you will choose a licensed electrical inspector, who will carry out the official inspection. If everything passes, you will receive a Compliance Certificate, which is also sent to JPS. From there, you can go to JPS with your documents (ID, TRN, proof of ownership or consent letter if renting) and apply for your meter connection. Once approved, connection is usually done within 3–5 working days. ⸻ IMPORTANT: All inspections must follow the Jamaica Electrical Code (JS 316) and the National Electrical Code (NEC). These can be obtained from the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), and the NEC is also available online (e.g. Amazon).
