From the Jamaica Electrical Fraternity
Season’s Greetings
Happy Holidays from the Jamaica Electrical Fraternity.
As we celebrate the Christmas season and prepare for the New Year, we encourage all households and businesses to prioritise electrical safety. The following guidelines are intended to protect life and property during this festive period.
Electrical Safety Measures to Apply During the Season
1. Inspect Decorative Lighting
Before using decorative or “pepper” lights from previous seasons, carefully check for:
- Damaged insulation
- Frayed or chafed wires
- Loose connections or other visible defects
Do not use damaged lighting under any circumstances.
2. Use Extension Cords Correctly
Extension cords should not be used for extended or permanent periods. Always ensure:
- The correct type and size of cord is used
- The cord is rated for the appliance or equipment connected
3. Check Capacity Before Installing Major Appliances
Before purchasing or installing major electrical appliances such as:
- Water heaters
- Electric stoves
- Clothes dryers
- Air conditioners
Have a registered electrician inspect your wiring, electrical panel, and breaker enclosure to confirm sufficient capacity for the additional load.
4. Turn Off Decorative Lights Overnight
Do not leave decorative lights or fixtures operating throughout the night. Always turn them off before going to bed.
5. Use Dedicated Circuits for High-Power Appliances
Air fryers and hot plates consume significant electrical energy and should always be connected to dedicated circuits to prevent overloading.
6. Generator Safety
For persons using generators:
- Operate generators outdoors only
- Ensure exhaust and mufflers are directed away from buildings
- Never refuel while the generator is running or hot
7. Electric Vehicle Chargers
Before installing an electric vehicle charger, ensure the wiring is inspected and approved by a licensed electrical inspector or registered electrician.
8. Fire Safety Equipment
Install:
- Smoke detectors in sleeping areas
- Heat detectors in kitchen areas
Having a fire extinguisher on hand is also strongly recommended.
9. Child Electrical Safety
Children should not be allowed to plug in chargers or operate electrical gadgets without adult supervision.
10. Post-Flood Electrical Inspections
Homes and businesses that were flooded or affected by hurricanes must have their electrical systems:
- Checked
- Re-inspected
- Certified by a licensed electrical inspector
11. Breaker Tripping or Panel Issues
If you experience:
- Constant breaker tripping
- Unusual sounds from the electrical panel
Turn off the affected breaker immediately and contact a registered electrician.
12. Avoid Illegal Connections
Illegal connections to the electrical grid endanger lives and property. Always use lawful and approved electrical connections.
Final Advisory
Electrical work is regulated for the protection of life and property and must be treated with the utmost care and respect. Do-it-yourself repairs and hobbyist interference with electrical infrastructure should be avoided.
Season’s Greetings
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, filled with safety, peace, and joy.
